Tinsel and Tech: The Consumer-Electronics Gift Guide

Image
Yes, Virginia, there is an economic funk. And too many bum 401(k) statements have made Santa more "No! No! No!" than "Ho! Ho! Ho!"But though the elves might be crying in their workshop over their downsized Christmas bonuses, that doesn't mean you can't make someone else happy this holiday. For gifts that keeps giving long after navy crew-neck sweaters have pilled and shrunk, and decadent chocolates have become cholesterol and cavities, the smart money is on technology. After all, if someone you love really wants to watch the stomach-churning ride of the Dow all day long — either on a handheld touchscreen PDA or on a big, honking plasma TV — be content in the knowledge that it was you who gave her that power. You can throw in the Tums as a stocking stuffer. Click here for more photos. What to Look For in a New Mattress

Image
Buying a new mattress is not like any casual bedroom shopping; rather, it calls for a lot of attention and research to decide upon the kind of mattress that could suit your body. Also, seeking medical advice before choosing a mattress could definitely come in handy while selecting the right one.\nSleep is essential for our mental as well as physical well-being. As we sleep, the body tries to undo the effect of stress that it was subjected to during the day. One wakes up feeling refreshed and full with energy to carry out the daily house tasks. This is the reason why sleep deprivation affects one\'s energy levels and leaves one highly irritable and fatigued. \nWhile sleep deprivation may be linked to stress or other medical causes, it\'s possible that the mattress you have been sleeping on, may be the reason why you have trouble falling asleep. Sleeping on a hard mattress can certainly cause your muscles to become sore.\nSo, if you keep tossing and turning at night, and wake u...

diy vacuum robot

Image
This is my first Vacuum Robot, which it's main purpose is to allow anyone to have a cleaning robot without paying so much money, to learn how they work, to build a nice robot that you can modify, update and program as much as you want, and of course to vacuum all that annoying fluff. This project is intended to be as easy to build as possible since all the elements and parts are easy to find on Digikey, eBay, Amazon, etc.The whole chassis was designed in Solidworks so lamp that it could be 3d printed. Currently it uses an Arduino Uno (if you don't like it too much you can easily change it for another micro controller, I decided to use this since my objective is that anyone could actually build it), micro-metal motors, fan propeller, infrared sensors and respective driver modules.Another one bites the dust! So, first I will define all the materials that I used and later I will suggest other options with a similar behavior.Controllers:Actuators:Sensors:Power:3d Printing:Other mat...

Stretching an Old Bed to Fit Your Frame

Image
FIRST Daughter Amy C art er may not be planning to move in January -- she just recently received an innerspring mattress to go with her antique canopy poster bed in the family quarters of the White House. The feather mattresses that once were standard on the antique wood beds in the Lincoln Room at the White House, Blair House and Mount Vernon are long gone. Instead, these valuable old beds sport firm innerspring mattresses. Robert Shone, president of Truman Boyle Bedding, who made the mattresses for these historic beds, claims that they are one of the last manufacturers of custom bedding in the area. "There used to be about 12 companies that specialized in bedding. But one by one they stopped. The larger mattress companies, like Serta and Sealy, can't afford to upset their production to make a one-of-a-kind mattress. "Boyle charges anywhere between $200-$400. Shone says they handle an average of seven mattresses per week. They make both innerspring and foam mattresses in...

My Half-Century in Dublin - read an extract

Image
In the spring of 1979, Mr Shigeo Sorimachi revisited the Chester Beatty Library and stayed for two weeks to do some research to prepare for producing a catalogue. He brought with him an assistant cum photographer, Mr Masaji Yagi. One Sunday afternoon, Mr Yagi, having finished up his work for the week, went for a drive on his own in the Dublin Mountains. The weather was very variable, with some sunny spells. True to the saying that you can experience four seasons within a day in Ireland, a rainbow suddenly appeared digital arching across the sky. Fascinated at the sight, he hastily pulled the car over to the side of the road, and started to take photos. On the following Monday morning when I arrived for work at the library, I was told that there was someone on the phone asking for me. I should say that in those days my office didn't have a telephone, so I rushed out to the main office where the phone was. It was a consul from the Japanese embassy. "By any chance, is there a Mr...

g-technology g-drive mobile ssd r-series review | …

Image
G-Technology is a relatively new and unknown name in the storage industry, though it's beenaround for a while in international markets. It had its beginnings as a specialised storage vendor targeting creative professionals, particularly those who use Apple's Mac ecosystem. The company was acquired by Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST), which itself is now owned and operated by Western Digital. WD is a brand we are much more familiar with, and thanks to its global reach, we now have the G-Technology product lineup here in India. WD still intends to target creative professionals, and these products will live alongside double a few similar offerings from HGST, SanDisk, and WD itself. The G-Technology range is pretty vast, encompassing enterprise-class storage servers, modular desktop RAID boxes, and equipment for demanding video and photo production environments, even outdoors. Use cases include editing high-resolution video live in the field, managing footage from multi...

How To Stain Kitchen Cabinets

Image
Staining kitchen cabinets, and how you prepare to stain depends on what you are starting with. You will prepare and stain a bit differently for each of the above situations; however, there are some basic steps and supplies that are universal when you are staining kitchen cabinets. List of Basic Supplies You Will Need: If you are building your own cabinets, staining them is simply a step in the building process. You can stain everything, grates and put finish on it too, before you ever put anything together. If your cabinets are pre-built, try to remove as much hardware as possible (handles and hinges). It is much easier to put the hardware back on than to try and clean it later. If you can take the hardware off, number each piece, then also put that same number on the wood where the hardware sits - making sure it is inconspicuous. You should also remove the doors and drawer fronts before you begin staining kitchen cabinets, if you can, so you can lay them flat. Again, if you r...
